IQNA – All of the people who have ever lived on the earth are descendants of Adam (AS) and Eve.

Mount Sarandib in Sri Lanka

After Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, God banished them from paradise for their disobedience and they descended to the earth.

God says in Verses 36-38 of Surah Al-Baqarah: “Satan made Adam and his spouse err and caused them to abandon the state in which they had been living. Then We said, ‘Descend, you are each other's enemies! The earth will be a dwelling place for you and it will provide you with sustenance for an appointed time.’ Adam was inspired by some words (of prayer) through which he received forgiveness from his Lord, for He is All-forgiving and All-merciful. We ordered them all to get out of the garden and told them that when Our guidance came to them, those who would follow it would have neither fear nor grief.”

Now the question is what place on the earth did Adam and Eve set foot first?

There are various views on this issue, two major ones being as follows:

1- Mount Sarandib in India (Sri Lanka). In many Hadiths, Mount Sarandib in today’s Sri Lanka is mentioned as the place of Hubut (descent) and first residence of Adam (AS). In this island there is a mountain that the Portuguese have called Adam’s Peak and on which there are the remains of Adam’s footsteps. The mountain is 7,420 feet high and it is said the plants that grow on this mountain were brought by Adam from paradise. Muslims, Christians and Buddhists visit the site where the remains of the footsteps are on a rock on top of the mountain.

Moroccan traveler and explorer Ibn Battuta has visited the island, where people still call Adam (AS) baba (father) and Eve mama (mother).

According to a Hadith, an Infallible Imam (AS) has described Sarandib as the best place on the earth where Adam (AS) descended from paradise.

2- Safa and Marwa Mountains. In some Hadiths, the Safa and Marwa Mountains are referred to as the place where Adam and Eve descended.

Where Did Adam and Eve Set Foot First?

They are two low mountains to the east of the Grand Mosque in Mecca. According to historical accounts, Hagar, the wife of Prophet Abraham (AS) tried to find water for her son Ismail (AS) in the area between these two mountains. Mount Safa was the place where Prophet Muhammad (AS) began the public propagation of Islam.
